W7ZMD, Silent Key, August 24, 2011

CADXA mourns the loss of long-time member and outstanding DXer, Nick Sues, W7ZMD.  Nick passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, August 24th, 2011.

This recent picture of Nick was taken as he worked ST0R on July 26th.

Nick was an ARRL card checker for various awards such as WAS and VUCC.  Licensed since 1957, radio was his first love.  He did amateur radio repair for many.  Nick served in the merchant marine and was a mentor to many fellow amateurs.  He is survived by two children and two grand-children.

Take a moment to leave a comment.  Thanks.

Comments:When we moved here in 80' didn't know Nick was just another block away.. didn't take long to figure it out! A great CW man and friend, too. We'd chat on the phone time to time, would look at my watch, 2+ hours had passed!! His shack was like traveling back through my radio roots.. 73/SK Nick

Comments:I first met Nick in 1962 or 3. We would spend hours on the phone listening on 40CW and chit-chatting. Everyone knows of his chit-chat prowess. I remember his efforts to listen for the local ham (Chuck Swain?) who was running with Don Miller and a ZL to put Pacific Islands on the air. They were missing at sea and never heard from again. In February of 1956, we operated from Mexico as XE0AL in the ARRL DX contest. All the ops were given a paper license with the call XE0AL which was obtained by a ham (un-remembered by my weak old brain) from Wickenberg. The contest was set up in a slaughterhouse just south of the border in Agua Prieta. The place was filthy at best and the odor was unimaginable. I couldn't operate the second weekend so we didn't go back. I am sure I could come up with many more examples of his operations and love of the hobby.

Comments:Nick never arrived on time for a meeting but when he got there he was always happy and made me laugh! I'll never forget the White 50's style loafers he always wore. Good techician - Nick fixed my equipment several times - and also an excellent CW op. RIP OT

Comments:Nick left us too soon. His CW abilities are well known. It was refreshing to hear stories of his youth at the memorial service. CW bit him at an early age and he picked up the code and never looked back. He was a mentor to many. yyc5dD
